Marathon's Vault Breaker PvE mode is live July 21 to August 4 — here's everything on Vault Data, kits, and what Season 3 PvE will look like.
Marathon Vault Breaker is a two week experimental Marathon PvE mode running from July 21 to August 4, 2026, dropped inside Update 1.1.5, and it exists so Bungie can farm your feedback before shipping something bigger. It plays solo, duo, or trio, at any runner level, inside the Cryo Archive, and it will not save your loot when you leave.
This Vault Breaker guide covers a rogue-lite structure bolted onto an extraction shooter, which is a strange marriage but here we are. You raid progressively harder vaults across multiple runs, and instead of keeping the gear you find, you keep a currency called Vault Data. Gear found during a run cannot be extracted, only Vault Data and event rewards survive the trip out, so hoarding loot here is a hobby for masochists.
Everything happens inside Marathon Cryo Archive, the zone previously reserved for regular UESC-versus-runner chaos. In Vault Breaker there are no rival crews shooting you in the back, just UESC bots and Warden bosses guarding the vaults, which is either a relief or an insult depending on how much you enjoyed getting third-partied.
Vault Data comes in two tiers and Bungie clearly expects you to fail at collecting the second one.
| Tier | How You Earn It | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 | Solving vaults | Must successfully exfil to keep it |
| Tier 1 (bonus) | Killing a UESC Commander | Awarded post run even if you die trying to leave |
| Tier 2 | Solving consecutive vaults in one run | Only counts with a successful exfil, no partial credit |
Tier 2 Vault Data is brutal for solo players, since chaining vaults and then surviving the walk out alone is exactly the kind of thing that gets you killed at the worst possible moment. Killing a Commander is the one mercy in this system, since that reward pays out whether your run goes well or falls apart.
You are not extracting your gear. You are extracting a receipt for gear you can buy later, from a shop, using currency you earned by not dying. Try not to confuse the two, several players already have.
The Vault Breaker Armory is a new tab under the event section, and it sells a rotating deluxe weapon daily, plus Cryo Key templates and prestige gear on a limited weekly schedule. Tier 1 items restock three or five times a week depending on the item, Tier 2 items get one shot per week, and you can downgrade Tier 2 into Tier 1 up to five times weekly if patience isn't your strength.
The Sponsored Kit Marathon introduces for this event starts weak on purpose, one standard weapon plus minor equipment, and it only gets stronger as you feed it Vault Data. Upgrade paths branch into weapon quality, survivability, or a wider spread of implants and cores, and you pick the direction, which is the only real strategic decision this mode currently offers you.
Matchmaking supports solo, duo, and trio queues, and premade crews are allowed if you don't trust strangers with your Tier 2 run. Bungie also attached Codex challenges tied to Vault Breaker, rewarding a weapon style, a weapon charm, a profile emblem, and a profile background, none of which will make you better at the game but all of which will make you look busy.
The shotgun got buffed, grenades got trimmed back, and the UI icons were redone because apparently nobody could tell what half of them meant before. Cradle progress also had its earlier 25 percent penalty reverted, which conveniently arrives after the players who rushed through it already suffered the slower version, a timing choice that will surprise exactly no one who has played a live service game before.
Marathon Update 1.1.5 is the vehicle for all of this, and the schedule is short by design.
Vault Breaker is explicitly a test lab for Marathon Season 3 PvE, the permanent full mode Bungie has committed to, with Season 3 currently slated for September 22, 2026, though that date is not locked to the PvE launch itself. This is Bungie asking players to beta test content that arrives roughly two months later, dressed up as an event.
Calling this a Marathon roguelite mode is accurate and also a little funny, since the genre mechanics of finding gear mid run and losing it on exit are standard roguelite fare, just wearing an extraction shooter's skin. Whether that hybrid convinces players who never wanted PvP in the first place remains the open question nobody at Bungie can answer yet.
Vault Breaker is a short, currency-gated preview of a mode that does not fully exist yet, built to harvest data from players willing to spend two weeks testing Bungie's homework. If you already own Marathon and wanted PvE, this is the closest thing available until Season 3 actually lands, assuming the full release doesn't slip, which at this studio is never a safe assumption.
