Marathon 1.1.5 Patch Notes: Vault Breaker Guide

The Marathon patch notes for Update 1.1.5 drop on July 21, 2026, and Bungie finally admits the obvious: nobody enjoys getting third partied mid loot grab, so they built a mode where that cannot happen. Vault Breaker mode is Marathon's first experimental PvE event, running from July 21 through August 4, and it sends Runners alone into Cryo Archive to crack vaults instead of each other's skulls.

This is a mid season update, not a full relaunch, so treat it like a patch with ambition rather than a new game. The Bungie extraction shooter still runs on the same core loop of loot, extract, repeat, except now there is a corner of the map where the other players cannot ruin your day.

What Vault Breaker Actually Is

Vault Breaker is a roguelite run through Cryo Archive. Each vault gets harder than the last, and the whole thing ends with something Bungie refuses to describe, because mystery sells better than a spoiler.

  • Runners take on progressively tougher vaults across multiple runs without any rival crews interfering.
  • The mode is open to any Runner Level and can be played Solo, Duo, or Trio, matchmade or premade.
  • Gear found inside a run does not exfil with you, so do not get attached to anything you loot mid vault.
  • Only event currency and designated event rewards actually leave the mode with you.

The reward structure runs on Vault Data, the event's dedicated currency, which upgrades a special Sponsored Kit built for the mode or buys gear from the new Vault Breaker Armory that you can then drag back into normal PvP runs. Two tiers exist, and Bungie made sure tier two actually requires effort instead of just showing up.

TierHow you earn itCondition to keep it
Tier 1Solving a vaultMust successfully exfil to keep it
Tier 1Killing a UESC CommanderCredited after the run regardless of exfil
Tier 2Solving consecutive vaults in one runOnly awarded if you exfil afterward
Vault Breaker is our very first experimental PvE mode, and Bungie has openly said it exists to gather feedback and data ahead of a full PvE offering arriving with Season 3 in September 2026, so consider this a paid beta test you are grinding through voluntarily.

Where This Fits Into Marathon's Season 2

Marathon Season 2 balance changes have been rolling in gradually rather than all at once, since Bungie prefers to nerf things in small painful increments rather than one clean cut. Earlier patches trimmed the Biotoxic Disinjector by a flat 35 percent damage reduction after it turned into the only weapon anyone bothered using, and melee lunge distance and damage against Runners both got quietly reined in too. None of that changes with 1.1.5, but it explains why your favorite loadout might already feel a little less invincible than launch week.

Update size on Steam sits around 518 MB, which is small compared to what it adds, so the Vault Breaker Armory tab and the new event currency tracking apparently did not need much room. The armory now has a dedicated Event section just for this, tucked next to your usual faction vendors.

Should You Bother

If PvP extraction has worn you down, Marathon Vault Breaker Armory rewards give you a reason to log back in without the risk of losing your kit to a better armed stranger. If you only care about the core loop, this is a two week detour with upgrade materials attached, not a replacement for anything. Either way it ends August 4, so the window to farm Vault Data is not generous.
