The season is called Season of Death Awakening. There's a Death Cult, a new world event called Pandemonium Ruptures, a new boss called the Corrupted Reaper, and Mythic Uniques got demoted from "special rarity tier" to "quality modifier any Unique can roll," which means your beloved Grandfather sword is now exactly as exclusive as a participation trophy. Solo Self-Found mode also exists now, for people who enjoy pain without the social component.

None of that changes how you level. It changes what you do once you're done leveling, which is a problem for a future version of you. This guide handles the part where you go from level 1 to torment-viable as a Warlock, using a build centered on Dread Claws with a side of demon minions, because apparently you need backup dancers.

Why Dread Claws and Not Whatever You Were Planning

Dread Claws is the core skill, it does the damage, and it does the damage consistently, which is the entire point of a leveling build. You're not optimizing for a boss kill clip. You're optimizing for not falling asleep between levels 1 and 60. The best warlock leveling build diablo 4 doesn't need to be clever. It needs to spam one button into a pile of enemies and have that be correct.

Wrath, Dominance, and the Other Things You'll Ignore

Warlock runs on two resources, because one resource was apparently too simple for a class built around demon contracts. Wrath is your standard primary resource, spent on most active skills. Dominance is specifically for summoning Greater Demons and issuing commands, and it exists purely to stop you from spamming every summon simultaneously like a toddler with a toy chest.

You'll also run into Hex, Shadowform, and Demonform along the way. Hex stacks critical strike chance against affected enemies. Shadowform grants Unhindered movement and stealth on movement, consuming stacks as you go. None of this matters in the first ten levels. All of it matters by level 40, when the build finally stops being "press claws" and starts being an actual rotation.

The Leveling Skill Tree, Point by Point

Point allocation order, because reading a wall of prose about skill trees is its own punishment. Follow this in sequence as you level. If you get bonus points from the season journey early, dump them into Dread Claws. It's never wrong.

  1. Level 1 – Doom: applies Hex, increases Abyss damage against low-health enemies.
  2. Level 3 – Dread Claws: your core skill and the reason you're reading this.
  3. Level 4 – Nether Step: technically defensive, functionally a speed boost.
  4. Level 5 – Wrath Doom: extra passive Wrath generation from Doom.
  5. Level 6 – Damage Dreadclaw's (cost reduction modifier skipped in favor of flat damage): more damage beats marginal cost savings here.
  6. Level 7 – Extra Charge on Nether Step: more burst movement between fights.
  7. Level 8 – Rampage: Archfiend skill, chance to Eviscerate, counts as a Greater Demon.
  8. Level 9 – Assimilation Doom: Doom applies Vulnerable, Weakened, or Slowed to affected enemies.
  9. Level 10 – Vulnerable Dreadclaw's: temporary vulnerable application, gets swapped out later.
  10. Level 11 – Movement Speed upgrade on Nether Step: stacks above the normal movement speed cap.
  11. Level 12 – Terror Swarm (ultimate unlock) plus Kill Streak modifier on Rampage.
  12. Level 13 – Extra point into Dread Claws: subtlety skills exist; ignore them.
  13. Level 14 – Contagion Doom: hex spreads to a new enemy on kill.
  14. Level 15 – Cascading Dread Claws, plus your first Soul Shard choice (Command Lawless via Mastermind path), and Ambush replaces Vulnerable Dreadclaw's.
  15. Level 16 – Extra point into Dread Claws: skip the early Nether Step variants.
  16. Level 17 – Elite Hit Chance on Rampage: guaranteed bonus effect against unaffected elites.
  17. Level 18–19 – Extra point into Dread Claws and Terror Swarm as they unlock.
  18. Level 20 – Abyssal Titan: turns Rampage into an Abyss recast skill. Drop Doom entirely, repurpose those points into Command Fallen (1pt), Wrath (1pt), Dominance (1pt), Megalomaniac variant.

The level 20 swap is the single most important step in this entire tree. You're trading Doom for Command Fallen and turning Rampage into your hex-application engine via Abyssal Titan. Skip this and the rest of the build falls apart in slow motion.

Level 20–40: The Build Actually Becomes a Build

After the Abyssal Titan swap, replace Kill Streak Damage on Rampage with Lesser Demon Wrath so Command Fallen generates resource passively. Keep dumping points into Dread Claws at every opportunity. At level 28, take Pull Terror Swarm to drag enemies into your Dread Claws radius, because manually positioning enemies is a luxury reserved for people with patience.

At level 30, soul fragments unlock, and Command Fallen upgrades into Fallen Rush, turning it into an Abyss skill that synergizes better with everything else you're doing. At level 34, take the Shadow Recall variant on Nether Step, which extends the duration of every Abyss summon you have, including Terror Swarm, which is technically a summon despite not looking like one.

The level 40 decision point is where you finally abandon Terror Swarm for Metamorphosis, picking the Maximum Life modifier (more useful than damage scaling while you have no control over bonus life) and the Terror Demon variant. This turns Metamorphosis into a permanent Abyss skill granting four Shadowform stacks per second, which lets you swap Cascading Dread Claws for Enveloping Terror, a circular AoE variant that also conjures extra Dread Claws around your Rampage demon. This is the point where your damage roughly doubles and you stop questioning your life choices.

Everything after level 40 is just pouring leftover points into Rampage, then Nether Step duration, then Command Fallen, then: when you've run out of anything meaningful: Metamorphosis, purely so the skill point notification stops nagging you. The skill tree design here isn't elegant. It's a leftover bin.

Defensive Pivot for Higher Torment

If you're dying more than you'd like while pushing torment tiers, swap Extra Charge on Nether Step for the Damage Reduction modifier. Combined with the extended movement speed duration, you get near-constant damage mitigation on a short cooldown. It's not glamorous, but neither is dying repeatedly to a pack of cultists.

Soul Shards and Fragments

Warlock's class mechanic is Soul Shards, unlocked at level 15 through the class questline starting with Hattar in the Dry Steppes. There are four primary shards: Legion (demon swarm), Vanguard (frontline Demonform aggression), Mastermind (Shadowform, stealth, control), and Ritualist (Hex, Overpower, Volatility combo play). Rune words are pure luck while leveling, but if Gar drops as an invocation rune, it's your top priority for consistent crit chance, paired with Seer as the ritual rune to activate it. Thul is a solid pickup too, applying frost novas for crowd control comfort. For gems, diamonds go in jewelry for resistances, amethyst in weapon slots for shadow damage, and sapphires in armor sockets for willpower.

Mercenaries

Run Subo as your active mercenary during leveling. Take the left tree for increased movement speed after attacking elites, then move into Opening Fire for bonus critical strike damage against enemies hit by his cover fire. For your reinforcement, Faryana with Bloodthirst gives extra attack speed whenever it triggers, which compounds nicely with everything else trying to make things die faster.

Paragon Board for Early Torment

Your first board starts by routing straight to the glyph socket and slotting the Demonology Glyph. Its secondary bonus is a constant multiplier that applies to this build at all times, and the primary bonus touches every damage source you're running. Get it leveled with a few early Pit runs the moment you have it.

For your second board, prioritize the Greater Hex node and beeline to the legendary node attached to it. It's both a damage increase against enemies and a damage reduction against you, which is exactly the kind of efficient double-dip that makes early torment pushes survivable instead of suicidal.

How to Actually Play This Thing

Early game: spam Dread Claws on cooldown, use Nether Step purely as a teleport. As content gets harder, decide whether you need the damage reduction modifier on Nether Step instead of extra charge: your call, your funeral. Once Rampage becomes Abyssal Titan, spam its recast while active; it's not optional, it's the whole point of taking it. Basic skill generation goes mostly automatic once Command Fallen Abyss variant is online, since Season 14 buffed minion durations so you're not babysitting respawns constantly.

Save your ultimate for elites and bosses, unless you're in content with a long elite-free stretch, in which case just spam it on cooldown into whatever's nearby. Beyond that: hard spam Dread Claws, keep Command Lawless active, and don't overthink it. This isn't a build that rewards overthinking. It rewards showing up and clicking.
