You own a laser sidearm nobody asked for and everybody now wants. The Devil's Ruin catalyst arrived in Destiny 2's final content update, and against all odds, it doesn't suck. Sit down. Let's talk about why a weapon you probably deleted in 2020 is suddenly relevant again.
Devil's Ruin is a 300 RPM solar exotic sidearm with an intrinsic trait called Close the Gap. Final blows spawn a fire sprite. Pick it up, hold reload, and you unlock a charged solar laser beam mode. That beam then triggers Pyrogenesis, scorching whatever you point it at and igniting anything it kills. It sounds like homework. It is not. Get one kill, pick up the sprite, hold a button, watch things burn. That's the whole tutorial.
Once the beam finishes, the weapon auto-reloads, so you can chain another kill, spawn another sprite, and repeat forever like a very flammable ouroboros. Fire sprites also hand you 12.5% grenade energy, which is nice if you enjoy double-dipping your ability economy.
The base weapon is purchasable from the exotic archive kiosk in the Tower for one exotic cipher and 100,000 glimmer. Simple. The catalyst, on the other hand, is pure gambling. It drops randomly from Vanguard Ops, Gambit, or Crucible playlists, and exotic catalysts remain some of the rarest drops in the game. Your best bet is running Exotic Class Item Quests, which use a knockout-style reward structure that can hand you catalysts instead of leaving it entirely to RNG spite.
The catalyst grants Collective Action: collecting an elemental pickup or destroying a Tangle grants a stacking damage buff. On most weapons this perk is a chore, because you need a reliable way to spawn elemental pickups, and most people don't. On Devil's Ruin, which intrinsically spawns fire sprites from its own kills, this perk works with zero extra effort. It's the rare case of an exotic catalyst that was clearly designed with its own weapon in mind, rather than bolted on as an afterthought.
Fire sprites and void breaches grant 8 seconds of the buff. Ionic traces, stasis shards, tangle detonations, and tangle throws grant 4 seconds. Picking up additional elemental sources while the timer is running extends it to a maximum of 16 seconds. The damage bonus itself sits at 30% in PvE and 10% in PvP.
That 30% applies to everything: base fire, the laser beam, and ignition damage. Here's what that looks like against a standard target dummy:

You don't even need Devil's Ruin to do all the spawning work. Any build that generates elemental pickups feeds this perk, including your teammates' pickups. Whoever wrote off this catalyst on paper, as most people did, was wrong. The Collective Action perk is one of the better catalyst designs Bungie shipped before the studio's content pipeline for this game quietly went dark.

Hunter's Journal gives you Solar Fulmination, which adds a second damage instance to your ignitions (roughly 171 extra damage on top of a 710 base hit) in a 12-meter radius, great for chaining kills. Pair it with Radiant Orbs, and picking up a single orb while radiant plus one fire sprite nets you a combined 55% damage increase across base fire and laser mode. Ignition damage from Solar Fulmination itself doesn't scale with this, but nobody's complaining.
Implement of Curiosity is arguably the stronger pick for a full Devil's Ruin build. Elemental Overdrive grants a 7-second buff equal to three weapon surge mods just from picking up an elemental source, and it stacks with the catalyst itself, a 58% damage increase from a single fire sprite pickup. Combine that with Fever and Chill (radiant from precision hits) and Elemental Siphon (free elemental pickups from kinetic kills), and you're stacking buffs faster than Bungie can nerf them, which, given the game's current state, is not happening anytime soon.
Stack everything, Collective Action, Elemental Overdrive, Radiance, and you're looking at a 90% damage increase in ideal conditions, climbing to a genuinely absurd 260% if you throw Cauterized Darkness into the mix against debuffed, non-boss combatants. That's not a buff, that's a war crime.
The base form of the weapon can ignite targets without the laser at all: suspend an enemy, shoot them with regular fire, and they detonate. No fire sprite spawns from it, but it works, and since this is Destiny's final content cycle, whatever bug or feature this was is now permanent. Bungie isn't patching anything ever again, so enjoy the exploit as intended lore.
Prismatic Titan remains the strongest home for this weapon. Run Spirit of the Horn and Spirit of Abeyant on your exotic class item: an enhanced Drengr's Lash suspends targets with extra lashes, and Spirit of the Horn fires tracking solar waves that scorch, setting up ignitions almost instantly. Add Diamond Lance and Frenzied Blade for darkness debuffs to trigger Cauterized Darkness, and you've got a suspend-scorch-ignite loop that barely requires thinking.
For armor, Sevast Ordnance (Warmind Cells) is a strong two-piece/four-piece combo that turns your solar kills into free healing detonations. If you'd rather grind for something spicier, the Yearning Echo set from the Dread dungeon converts elemental pickups and ammo grabs into damage reduction and reload speed, then explodes into a fountain of orbs on shield break. It is, without exaggeration, one of the best sets in the game, so go get it before there's nobody left updating drop tables.
Devil's Ruin was already solid after its rework. The catalyst pushes it into genuine top-tier territory for anyone running solar or prismatic, PvE-focused. It's cheap to activate, forgiving to build around, and scales absurdly with minimal effort. If you were holding off on farming this Destiny 2 exotic catalyst, stop overthinking it and go run some playlist activities. The game isn't getting any more content, so this is as good as your loadout options are ever going to get.
